Gombrich: The story of art
First time I've heard about this book was in my first semester during my studies. We had the class art history and our professor was a very enthusiastic and engaging art lover. He pretty much knew everything and could teach you art history, so you do enjoy, understand and simply love this class. I always listened to his lectures with amazement. He definitely changed the way I did understand art history and we as students got a deep look into the art world, artists, and deep meaning of every single artwork he presented us.
Exactly this professor recommended us to read Gombrich "The story of art". He loved it and promised us it wouldn't be boring and it is a classic book to study for every art and design student. A must have reference book.
First time I went to the bookstore I was afraid to buy the book. The number of pages and all the text seemed frightening to me. What if the book is definitely boring? What if the text is too complex? What if I simply don't understand it and this book will end on my shelf as a forgotten purchase?
Luckily my professor was right! From the beginning I loved this book! Gombrichs writing style is very engaging and simple to understand. He explains the art world and the certain work and time frames perfectly. I read the entire book in something like a week. I read this book in the bus, in the train, at evening, in a break... Simply everywhere. It was just like reading a good story. The story of art.
