Since I remember I was always fascinated by strong symbols. Why do we connect meanings to certain things? During my studies, I wanted to learn more about the meaning of certain symbols and their cultural context. It was simply an interest I wanted to study and learn to understand and use.
Symbols are often used in our media, in stories, in fairy tales and of course also in illustration. The more knowledge I have about what messages certain color or objects provide the more I feel confident in doing my work on point. And of course, it helps me to analyze our current medias and artwork too. Learning about symbols helped me to understand illustrations better and to read the deeper meaning in a composition.
- Rudolf Koch "The book of signs", a classic literature about Semiotik. Koch was a German type designer and a pioneer in the research of symbols and signs, their meaning and messages.
- Tresidder "Dictionary of symbols", a good reference book and I do love the modern design of this book with the vibrant colors.
- Kretschmer "Lexikon der Symbole und Attribute der Kunst", a great resource for art history and classic symbol elements in art.
- Heller "Wie Farben wirken", I got forced to read this book for a class. After all, I learned a lot about the symbol of every color and their cultural backgrounds.
There are definitely more great books out there about symbols and colors and I do recommend to research! Every dictionary is different and has variations in their semiotics focus.
